About Jan Langdon Handtmann

Jan Handtmann is a native Californian with strong mid-western roots. She studied art at the University of Southern California and graduated Suma Cum Laude from what is now known as; The Roski School of Fine Arts. Jan has used her art training in the pursuit of many different creative endeavors which include, printmaking, photography, drawing and painting graphic design, sculpture, furniture design, and architectural planning and design. Jan worked as a commercial space planner and interior architectural designer in Los Angeles and Orange counties. She has exhibited her prints drawings and paintings primarily in California. She has work in private collections around the country, and several permanent architectural neon sculptural installations. Art has always been a passion for Jan and an important part of her life.

Jan has maintained her relationship with her Alma Mater and served on the Board of Councilors for the Roski School for many years. Jan considers herself to be very lucky in have Ruth Weisberg, her print making Professor at USC and the former Dean of the Roski school, as a mentor and friend. Ruth was the one who encourage Jan to carry on her studio practice when she retired from design work. In addition, Jan, Ruth and two other artists, Caryl Levy and Susan Gesundheit, formed an artist collective known as the Four Graces. The four Graces travel together, do art, have exhibitions, and often gather at Jan’s studio in Santa Ynez for workshops.
